The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 1,107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Djibouti (X tons) was the main destination for mango and mangosteen exports from Ethiopia, accounting for a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, mango and mangosteen exports to Djibouti exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Somalia (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Djibouti stood at +26.1%.

In value terms, Djibouti ($X) and Somalia ($X) were the largest markets for mango and mangosteen exported from Ethiopia worldwide.

Somalia, with a CAGR of +99.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review.

The average mango and mangosteen export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -17.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 57% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Djibouti stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Somalia (+12.3%).

In value terms, mango and mangosteen imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 868%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of mango and mangosteen to Ethiopia, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, mango and mangosteen imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kenya (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India totaled +43.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+113.1% per year) and Sudan (+111.1% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas to Ethiopia, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India totaled +48.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+86.5% per year) and Sudan (+127.7% per year).

In 2022, the average mango and mangosteen import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mango and mangosteen import price increased by +90.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sudan (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
