In value terms, piper pepper exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for piper pepper exports from Ethiopia, with a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, piper pepper exports to Sudan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. Canada (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Sudan totaled -16.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+12.2% per year) and Canada (+18.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for piper pepper exported from Ethiopia were the United States ($X), Sudan ($X) and Canada ($X), with a combined 70% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +16.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average piper pepper export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -26.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 69%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sudan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Djibouti (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ethiopia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of piper pepper decreased by -3.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 477% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, piper pepper imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 342%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest piper pepper supplier to Ethiopia, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, piper pepper imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +47.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+18.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-1.9% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of piper pepper to Ethiopia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with an 8.1% share.
