Exports by Country
Saudi Arabia (X tons) was the main destination for strawberry exports from Ethiopia, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, strawberry exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Nigeria (X tons), with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Saudi Arabia totaled +26.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-3.0% per year) and Nigeria (+39.2% per year).
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) remains the key foreign market for strawberries exports from Ethiopia, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Saudi Arabia stood at +38.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+3.9% per year) and Nigeria (+51.6% per year).

In 2022, the average strawberry export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.5% against the previous year. In 2022, the amount of strawberries imported into Ethiopia amounted to X tons, rising by 5.6% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 218%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, strawberry imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 326% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest strawberry supplier to Ethiopia, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, strawberry imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), sevenfold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +14.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-6.4% per year) and Egypt (-10.8% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of strawberries to Ethiopia, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Israel ($X), with a 4.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States amounted to +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Israel (-13.5% per year) and Egypt (+0.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average strawberry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 34% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 102%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
