The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Sudan (X tons) was the main destination for sulphuric acid exports from Ethiopia, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sudan amounted to -19.4%.

In value terms, Sudan ($X) also remains the key foreign market for sulphuric acid and oleum exports from Ethiopia.

Imports into Ethiopia

In 2022, the amount of sulphuric acid and oleum imported into Ethiopia shrank to X tons, reducing by -6.3% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 207%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphuric acid imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 299% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest sulphuric acid supplier to Ethiopia, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, sulphuric acid imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India amounted to +23.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+40.2% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-0.7% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sulphuric acid and oleum to Ethiopia, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India amounted to +33.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+11.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+50.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average sulphuric acid import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -7.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 55%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+54.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
