From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Somalia (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ethiopia
In 2022, the amount of tea imported into Ethiopia dropped to X tons, waning by -3.2% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tea imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 91% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Ethiopia, together comprising 68% of total imports. Italy, Kenya, Sri Lanka, India, South Africa and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +39.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), China ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) were the largest tea suppliers to Ethiopia, together comprising 75% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Kenya, India, Italy, South Africa and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +59.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tea import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -15.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+16.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
