The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -6.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The average yield of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Ethiopia dropped slightly to X kg per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021 figures. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 0.2%. The unmanufactured tobacco yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Exports from Ethiopia
In 2022, approx. X kg of tobacco (unmanufactured) were exported from Ethiopia; growing by 19% against the previous year. In general, total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +51.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X kg in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 132% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X kg) and Malawi (X kg) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Ethiopia.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +38.6%).
In value terms, the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Ethiopia were Germany ($X) and Malawi ($X).
In terms of the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +57.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The average unmanufactured tobacco export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, unmanufactured tobacco export price decreased by -7.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malawi stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+13.9%).
Unmanufactured Tobacco Imports
Imports into Ethiopia
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured), when their volume increased by 20% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 101%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 95%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), China (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports to Ethiopia, with a combined 93% share of total imports. Belgium lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 7.5%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +106.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Ethiopia, together accounting for 94% of total imports.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +123.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
