Malawi (X tons) was the main destination for vaccine exports from Ethiopia, with a approx. 100% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Malawi amounted to +68.5%.

In value terms, Malawi ($X) also remains the key foreign market for vaccines for human medicine exports from Ethiopia.

In 2022, the average vaccine export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 39% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 129%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Malawi.

In 2022, purchases abroad of vaccines for human medicine decreased by -23.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, vaccine imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 219%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest vaccine supplier to Ethiopia, with a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, vaccine imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), threefold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +39.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+55.3% per year) and the United States (+44.1% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest vaccine suppliers to Ethiopia, together accounting for 67% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +70.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average vaccine import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -14.4% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, vaccine import price increased by +76.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
