After two years of decline, the EU abrasives market increased by 11% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, shipments abroad of abrasives (natural) increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, abrasives exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Greece prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Greece increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Netherlands (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-20.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Greece (+23 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Germany (-24.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest abrasives supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Greece ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 75% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +20.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 33% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +77.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The Netherlands was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 38% of total imports. Germany (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (9.8%), Poland (8%), Sweden (7.8%), Italy (7.2%) and Denmark (6.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to abrasives imports into the Netherlands stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Poland (+10.4%), Sweden (+8.0%), Germany (+3.4%) and Italy (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012-2021. Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden increased by +7.2, +3.5 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported abrasives (natural) in the European Union, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands amounted to +17.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+5.6% per year) and Germany (+2.6% per year).
