Acrylonitrile Market Size in the EU

In 2021, the EU acrylonitrile market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in shipments abroad of acrylonitrile, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 181%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, acrylonitrile exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 184% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

The Netherlands was the major exporter of acrylonitrile in the European Union, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 44% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +64.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, acrylonitrile imports in the European Union soared to X tons, rising by 17% against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, acrylonitrile imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the largest importer of acrylonitrile in the European Union, constituting 64% of total import. Germany (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8% share, followed by Italy (7.7%), Hungary (7%), Portugal (5.8%) and Spain (5.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 61% of total imports. Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Among the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +6.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 41% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Spain ($X per ton) and Hungary ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
