After two years of decline, shipments abroad of air conditioning machines increased by 2.4% to X units in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, air conditioning machine exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the seven major exporters of air conditioning machines, namely Germany, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Netherlands and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total export. France (X units), Sweden (X units), Belgium (X units), Lithuania (X units) and Hungary (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +9.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 47% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Slovakia, Sweden, Lithuania, Belgium and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +8.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 9.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of air conditioning machines increased by 13% to X units, rising for the seventh consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +94.7% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, air conditioning machine imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +85.7% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X units), France (X units), Italy (X units), Spain (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) represented the main importer of air conditioning machines in the European Union, constituting 61% of total import. Belgium (X units) held a 5.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (4.6%). The following importers - Greece (X units), Sweden (X units), Hungary (X units), Portugal (X units), Romania (X units) and Austria (X units) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +18.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest air conditioning machine importing markets in the European Union were France ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 40% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Sweden, Greece, Austria, Portugal, Hungary and Romania, which together accounted for a further 44%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +13.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
