Aircraft Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU aircraft market increased by 69% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aircraft production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +24.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Aircraft exports expanded remarkably to X units in 2022, picking up by 6.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, aircraft exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +60.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, France (X units), Poland (X units), Italy (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) was the largest exporter of airplanes and other aircraft in the European Union, making up 64% of total export. The Czech Republic (X units) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 6.5% share, followed by Germany (6.5%) and Spain (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +30.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 50% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Poland, France and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Among the main exporting countries, France, with a CAGR of +19.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 45%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while France ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU

For the fourth consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in overseas purchases of airplanes and other aircraft, which increased by 4.3% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 53%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aircraft imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 144%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Romania (X units), distantly followed by Ireland (X units), Germany (X units), Spain (X units), Italy (X units), Poland (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the major importers of airplanes and other aircraft, together generating 82% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +53.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported airplanes and other aircraft in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany stood at +9.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+2.5% per year) and Poland (+4.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -56.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 102%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while Ireland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
