In 2021, the EU antibiotic market decreased by -18.9% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, antibiotic production reduced remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 9.9%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.

Exports in the EU
In 2021, overseas shipments of antibiotics increased by 2.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 12%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, antibiotic exports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented roughly 58% of total exports in 2021. Italy (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Bulgaria (13%) and Belgium (6.1%). The following exporters - Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest antibiotic supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 62% of total exports. Belgium, France, Germany and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +3.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, falling by -6.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, supplies from abroad of antibiotics decreased by -21.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, antibiotic imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of antibiotics, namely the Netherlands, Spain and Italy, represented more than half of total import. Belgium (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.6% share, followed by France (7.5%) and Germany (5.5%). Bulgaria (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of -0.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Spain, Belgium and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 30%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +10.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bulgaria (+20.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
