Antimony Market Size in the EU
In 2022, the EU antimony market increased by 19% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +91.0% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, antimony production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 199% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the EU
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of antimony decreased by -71.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 360% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, antimony exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 282%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Portugal represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 47% of total exports. Poland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by the Netherlands (17%) and Spain (6.1%). The following exporters - Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to antimony exports from Portugal stood at +14.5%. At the same time, Poland (+27.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.9%), France (-2.9%), Spain (-5.6%) and Germany (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Portugal (+29 p.p.) and Poland (+18 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -2%, -4.3%, -10.4% and -14% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest antimony supplier in the European Union, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 13% share.
In the Netherlands, antimony exports declined by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+12.3% per year) and Spain (+12.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -23.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+19.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Antimony Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2022, overseas purchases of antimony decreased by -28% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, antimony imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
France represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 53% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (10%). The following importers - Austria (X tons) and Germany (X tons) - together made up 4.7% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +6.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Belgium ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total imports. Austria and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5%.
Austria, with a CAGR of +6.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 73% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
