Apricot Market Size in the EU
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in the EU apricot market, when its value increased by 1% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Apricot Production in the EU
In value terms, apricot production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Greece (X tons), together accounting for 75% of total production. France, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average apricot yield expanded notably to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 6.7% compared with the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of apricots production in the European Union contracted modestly to X ha, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 1.9%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to apricot production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in the EU
In 2022, apricot exports in the European Union reduced slightly to X tons, falling by -2.9% on the year before. Overall, exports recorded a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, apricot exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented roughly 68% of total exports in 2022. Greece (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by France (8.9%). The following exporters - Austria (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - together made up 4.2% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +22.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest apricot supplying countries in the European Union were Spain ($X), Italy ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 80% share of total exports. Greece, Austria and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
Austria, with a CAGR of +27.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -14.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of apricots, when their volume increased by 3.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, apricot imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany was the main importer of apricots in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2022. Austria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons), Romania (X tons), Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total imports. The following importers - Bulgaria (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to apricot imports into Germany stood at -1.0%. At the same time, Romania (+12.9%), Slovakia (+8.7%), Bulgaria (+5.1%), Croatia (+4.3%), the Czech Republic (+3.3%) and Austria (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012-2022. Poland and Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.7%), Belgium (-5.4%), the Netherlands (-6.2%) and Italy (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Romania (+4.8 p.p.), Austria (+2.6 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+1.8 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-1.9 p.p.), Belgium (-2 p.p.), the Netherlands (-2.5 p.p.) and Italy (-6.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported apricots in the European Union, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Austria (+3.4% per year) and France (-1.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -13.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
