The EU cork article market fell sharply to $X in 2021, which is down by -44.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cork article exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Portugal was the largest exporter of cork articles in the European Union, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), achieving a 15% share of total exports. France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cork articles. At the same time, France (+7.6%) and Spain (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +7.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Spain and France increased by +5 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 12%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of cork articles increased by 4.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cork article imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Portugal (X tons), mixing up a 5.5% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons), Denmark (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Austria (X tons), Poland (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Greece (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +27.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cork article importing markets in the European Union were France ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X), together accounting for 70% of total imports. Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +15.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 20%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
