The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the EU
In 2022, overseas shipments of articles of peat increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, articles of peat exports reached $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +96.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Latvia prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 65% of total exports in 2022. The Czech Republic (X tons) took an 8.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (7%), the Netherlands (6.1%), Denmark (5%) and Sweden (4.9%).
Latvia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of peat exports, with a CAGR of +78.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sweden (+50.2%), the Netherlands (+45.9%) and Poland (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Denmark (-1.3%) and the Czech Republic (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Latvia (+65 p.p.), the Netherlands (+5.8 p.p.) and Sweden (+4.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Poland (-3.3 p.p.), Denmark (-6.7 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-18.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest articles of peat supplying countries in the European Union were Denmark ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 62% of total exports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +48.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -17.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of articles of peat, when their volume decreased by -0.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 16%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, articles of peat imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Spain represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Denmark (X tons), together constituting a 32% share of total imports. Lithuania (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Austria (X tons), Romania (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and France (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Spain increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Latvia (+32.8%), Lithuania (+29.6%), Portugal (+11.9%) and Romania (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +32.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Austria (-4.1%), Germany (-4.5%), Denmark (-4.8%), Sweden (-5.7%), the Czech Republic (-7.5%) and France (-29.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+35 p.p.), Lithuania (+3.9 p.p.), Latvia (+2 p.p.) and Portugal (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Germany, the Czech Republic and France saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -4.3% and -34.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest articles of peat importing markets in the European Union were Denmark ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 38% share of total imports. Lithuania, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Austria, France, Latvia and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
Latvia, with a CAGR of +18.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, articles of peat import price increased by +114.1% against 2015 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+21.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
