Stationery Market Size in the EU

The EU stationery market fell modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -2.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. In 2022, approx. X tons of articles of stationery were exported in the European Union; dropping by -3.1% against the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, stationery exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The biggest shipments were from Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons), together reaching 65% of total export. It was distantly followed by Austria (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together comprising a 9.2% share of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (X tons), Estonia (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +8.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 51% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +13.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 7.3%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of articles of stationery increased by 7.6% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stationery imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 7.8%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
