Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 61%. In 2021, Germany (X tons) represented the key exporter of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations, committing 32% of total exports. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Spain (13%), Poland (12%), the Netherlands (5.8%), Slovakia (5.7%) and Romania (5%).

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations. At the same time, Romania (+27.4%), Spain (+12.5%), the Netherlands (+9.8%), Slovakia (+5.4%) and Poland (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +27.4% from 2012-2021. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and Romania, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Among the main exporting countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +28.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by the Netherlands (7.7%), Hungary (6.9%), Italy (6.6%) and Austria (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +35.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in the European Union, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 15% share.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, artificial and colloidal graphite import price increased by +96.0% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
