Artificial Staple Fibre Market Size in the EU

The EU artificial staple fibre market dropped dramatically to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -19.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre production declined dramatically to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 116%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports in the EU

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of artificial staple fibres increased by 16% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre exports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 12%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 43% of total exports. Italy (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 56% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to artificial staple fibre exports from Germany stood at -1.2%. At the same time, Spain (+23.1%), Italy (+10.7%) and Austria (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Germany, Italy, Spain and Austria increased by +12, +11, +11 and +9.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of total exports. France and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +18.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, purchases abroad of artificial staple fibres decreased by -11.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artificial staple fibre imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -16.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Italy (X tons) represented the key importer of artificial staple fibres, constituting 36% of total imports. Austria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Bulgaria (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 50% share of total imports. The following importers - Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - each recorded a 6.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +37.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest artificial staple fibre importing markets in the European Union were Italy ($X), Portugal ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports. Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Austria, with a CAGR of +31.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
