Avocado Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU avocado market decreased by -9.7% to $X for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded strong growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Avocado Production in the EU

In value terms, avocado production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of avocado production was Spain (X tons), comprising approx. 77% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Portugal (X tons), sixfold.

In Spain, avocado production increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Portugal (+36.3% per year) and Greece (+22.4% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of avocados in the European Union reduced to X tons per ha, waning by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the avocado yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of avocados production in the European Union contracted to X ha, with a decrease of -7% compared with 2021. Overall, the harvested area, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 32%. In 2022, overseas shipments of avocados decreased by -14.3% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, avocado exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) represented the key exporter of avocados, comprising 57% of total exports. Spain (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (X tons). All these countries together took near 33% share of total exports. Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +15.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Portugal (+32.0%), Germany (+13.0%), Spain (+9.6%) and France (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands increased by +12 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest avocado supplier in the European Union, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 6.2% share.

In the Netherlands, avocado exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+11.9% per year) and France (+10.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of avocados, when their volume decreased by -7.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 28%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main importers of avocados, together mixing up 78% of total imports. Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +27.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of total imports. Germany, Italy, Poland, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +30.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, declining by -8.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
