Barley Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU barley market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Barley Production in the EU

In value terms, barley production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons), with a combined 59% share of total production.

In 2022, the average yield of barley in the European Union shrank modestly to X tons per ha, remaining stable against the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barley exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +66.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 39%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2022, France (X tons) was the main exporter of barley, making up 42% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Hungary (X tons), together generating a 38% share of total exports. Denmark (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 76% of total exports.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 30% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, barley imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +105.0% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The purchases of the four major importers of barley, namely the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total import. In value terms, the largest barley importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 57% of total imports. In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Portugal ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) and Ireland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
