Baryte Market Size in the EU

The EU baryte market expanded significantly to $X in 2021, picking up by 5.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 9.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, baryte exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +84.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

The Netherlands was the major exporter of barytes in the European Union, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Bulgaria (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 39% share of total exports. Italy (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bulgaria (+71.5%), Germany (+13.6%), Spain (+5.5%) and Italy (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +71.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bulgaria and Germany increased by +18 and +6.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest baryte supplier in the European Union, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands stood at +5.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+5.8% per year) and Germany (+23.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 10%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Baryte imports expanded notably to X tons in 2021, surging by 13% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, baryte imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands was the major importer of barytes in the European Union, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 41% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together comprising a 46% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to baryte imports into the Netherlands stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Spain (+6.8%) and Italy (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +6.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Poland (-4.5%), Romania (-6.2%), France (-10.0%) and Germany (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+16 p.p.), Italy (+7.6 p.p.) and Spain (+6.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France and Germany saw its share reduced by -3.5% and -22.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest baryte importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +7.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
