Base Station Market Size in the EU

For the fourth consecutive year, the EU base station market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 4.5% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, base station production contracted significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 6.9%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of base stations decreased by -18.4% to X tons, falling for the seventh consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, base station exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Hungary (X tons) was the major exporter of base stations, creating 49% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Sweden (X tons), together committing a 37% share of total exports. Denmark (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Hungary decreased at an average annual rate of -4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Italy (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012-2021. Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-12.5%), Germany (-13.7%), Sweden (-22.1%) and the Netherlands (-23.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Hungary (+35 p.p.), Italy (+7.1 p.p.) and Denmark (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Sweden (-5.4 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-25.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the largest base station supplier in the European Union, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Hungary amounted to +4.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-6.5% per year) and Germany (-9.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 74% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of base stations was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, base station imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented roughly 61% of total imports in 2021. Hungary (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Denmark (X tons). All these countries together took near 16% share of total imports. Germany (X tons), Austria (X tons), Finland (X tons), France (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +18.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest base station importing markets in the European Union were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 49% of total imports. Hungary, Austria, France, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +10.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+13.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
