Basic Dye Market Size in the EU
In 2021, the EU basic dye market decreased by -5.7% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the market value increased by 7.7% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, basic dye production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -14.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 40%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of basic dyes and preparations based thereon increased by 5.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, basic dye exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Spain was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 47% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together constituting a 39% share of total exports. Poland (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Spain increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the Netherlands (+35.9%), Poland (+26.3%), Finland (+12.2%) and Italy (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belgium (-10.5%) and Germany (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+14 p.p.), Spain (+9.7 p.p.), Poland (+3.3 p.p.), Italy (+3.2 p.p.) and Finland (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium and Germany saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -28% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 64% share of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +30.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fifth year in a row, the European Union recorded decline in purchases abroad of basic dyes and preparations based thereon, which decreased by -13.1% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, basic dye imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented roughly 36% of total imports in 2021. Italy (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (8.6%), Poland (8.2%), France (7.8%), Sweden (7.5%) and Belgium (4.7%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +6.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 45% of total imports. Italy, Belgium, Spain, Sweden and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Sweden, with a CAGR of +8.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
