In 2022, the EU beer market increased by 1.4% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the market value increased by 6.2% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Beer Production in the EU
In value terms, beer production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 9.2%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Beer exports dropped to X tons in 2022, reducing by -2.4% against 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 3.8%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
In value terms, beer exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 8% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) was the key exporter of beer in the European Union, creating 56% of total export. The Czech Republic (X tons) took a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ireland (5.3%) and France (5.3%). Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 64% of total exports. These countries were followed by France, the Czech Republic, Spain, Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Poland and Portugal, which together accounted for a further 30%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +10.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 5.5%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of beer, when their volume increased by 1.2% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 7.5%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, beer imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of beer imports in 2022 were France (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together accounting for 63% of total import. It was distantly followed by Ireland (X tons), creating a 5.3% share of total imports. Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +10.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Germany, Spain, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Croatia, with a CAGR of +9.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
