Borates Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU borates market increased by 8.2% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The Netherlands (X tons) and Austria (X tons) represented roughly 41% of total exports in 2022. Poland (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Slovenia (8.5%), Sweden (8.2%), Italy (5.7%), Latvia (5.7%), Germany (5.5%) and Spain (4.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Latvia (with a CAGR of +120.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest borates supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Austria ($X), with a combined 44% share of total exports. Germany, Sweden, Slovenia, Latvia, Italy and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Latvia, with a CAGR of +115.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of borates decreased by -19.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, borates imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The purchases of the twelve major importers of borates, namely Germany, Spain, France, Poland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Austria, Sweden, Latvia and Slovenia, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
