Bottled Water Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU bottled water market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bottled Water Production in the EU

In value terms, bottled water production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 16%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the EU

Bottled water exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, jumping by 18% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bottled water exports totaled $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 12%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

The Czech Republic was the main exporter of bottled waters in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 35% of total exports in 2022. France (X tons) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (18%), Italy (8.1%) and Slovenia (7.3%). Croatia (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +4.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bottled water supplying countries in the European Union were France ($X), Italy ($X) and Belgium ($X), together accounting for 76% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +4.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Bottled water imports expanded sharply to X tons in 2022, picking up by 6.7% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bottled water imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the major importers of bottled waters in the European Union, together recording approx. 66% of total imports. France (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons). All these countries together took near 24% share of total imports. Slovenia (X tons) and Luxembourg (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 59% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Luxembourg, Poland and Slovenia, which together accounted for a further 16%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +5.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.1% against the previous year. Import price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bottled water import price increased by +22.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
