In 2022, the amount of breathing appliances and gas masks exported in the European Union surged to X units, picking up by 27% on 2021. In general, exports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 46%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, breathing appliances exports totaled $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -11.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The Netherlands (X units) and Germany (X units) were the key exporters of breathing appliances and gas masks in 2022, amounting to approx. 34% and 27% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Poland (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and France (X units), together creating a 20% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X units) and Spain (X units) - each recorded a 7.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +31.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest breathing appliances supplier in the European Union, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 10% share.
In Germany, breathing appliances exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+6.3% per year) and Poland (+26.6% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -18.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the Netherlands ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+9.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, purchases abroad of breathing appliances and gas masks decreased by -12.1% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 87%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, breathing appliances imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany represented the major importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 28% of total imports. France (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by the Netherlands (9.5%), Spain (7.6%), Italy (6%), Poland (5.1%) and Belgium (4.7%). Denmark (X units), Latvia (X units), Finland (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Austria (X units) and Romania (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to breathing appliances imports into Germany stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Romania (+9.8%), the Czech Republic (+9.8%), Latvia (+8.3%), Spain (+8.3%), Finland (+7.7%), Poland (+7.6%), Denmark (+3.5%), Austria (+3.2%), the Netherlands (+1.9%) and Italy (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +9.8% from 2012-2022. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+3.3 p.p.), Poland (+2 p.p.), Latvia (+1.7 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Germany and France saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -6.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported breathing appliances and gas masks in the European Union, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany stood at +5.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+3.2% per year) and Denmark (+9.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per unit), while Romania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
