Cabbage Market Size in the EU

The EU cabbage market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cabbage Production in the EU

In value terms, cabbage production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -15.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Poland (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together accounting for 50% of total production. Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, France and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +3.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cabbage yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, remaining stable against 2021 figures. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cabbage yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cabbage harvested area declined modestly to X ha in 2022, leveling off at 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cabbage production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, exports of cabbage and other brassicas in the European Union declined to X tons, reducing by -1.8% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 13%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports contracted to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands represented the main exporter of cabbage and other brassicas in the European Union, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 31% of total exports in 2022. Spain (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons). All these countries together held near 57% share of total exports. Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of cabbage and other brassicas. At the same time, Belgium (+5.0%), Spain (+4.8%), Portugal (+2.2%) and Italy (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +5.0% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+4.8 p.p.) and Belgium (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Poland (-6.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 70% of total exports. Poland, Germany, Belgium and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +8.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -7.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main importers of cabbage and other brassicas, together achieving 74% of total imports. The following importers - Romania (X tons), Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cabbage and other brassicas. At the same time, Poland (+13.4%), Spain (+7.5%), Italy (+5.6%), Romania (+5.2%), Belgium (+5.1%), Austria (+2.6%), France (+1.8%) and Lithuania (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012-2022. Sweden and Slovakia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.2%) and the Netherlands (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, Belgium and Italy increased by +3.2, +1.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.
