The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 28%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Portugal was the key exporter of calcareous building stone in the European Union, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together mixing up a 41% share of total exports. Greece (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Portugal increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, France (+26.9%), Greece (+17.7%), Belgium (+12.0%) and Austria (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +26.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Croatia (-4.5%) and Germany (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Portugal (+17 p.p.), France (+11 p.p.), Belgium (+2 p.p.) and Greece (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Austria, Germany and Croatia saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -8.5% and -13% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Portugal ($X) remains the largest calcareous building stone supplier in the European Union, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 7.4% share.
In Portugal, calcareous building stone exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+3.6% per year) and Croatia (+0.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+32.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, approx. X tons of calcareous building stone were imported in the European Union; with an increase of 34% against 2020. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +71.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, calcareous building stone imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 60%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) represented the main importer of calcareous building stone, making up 35% of total imports. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Ireland (X tons). All these countries together took near 48% share of total imports. Romania (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +70.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and Portugal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 59% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany and Romania, which together accounted for a further 26%.
Ireland, with a CAGR of +67.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -4% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 40%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
