In 2021, Italy (X units) was the main exporter of calendering and rolling machines, generating 49% of total exports. Germany (X units) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (7%) and France (6.3%). The following exporters - Lithuania (X units), Belgium (X units) and Slovenia (X units) - together made up 8.8% of total exports.
Exports from Italy increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Slovenia (+80.2%), Lithuania (+35.1%), Belgium (+15.7%), the Netherlands (+12.4%) and France (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +80.2% from 2012-2021. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the Netherlands, Lithuania, Belgium and Slovenia increased by +3.6, +3.3, +2.2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest calendering machine supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 86% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Lithuania, Belgium and Slovenia, which together accounted for a further 4.6%.
Slovenia, with a CAGR of +52.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, falling by -22.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 35%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while France ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (-1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Calendering Machine Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2021, supplies from abroad of calendering and rolling machines decreased by -5.8% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 1,038%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, calendering machine imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Belgium represented the major importer of calendering and rolling machines in the European Union, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 30% of total imports in 2021. France (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Poland (10%), Lithuania (9.2%), Romania (7.2%) and Portugal (5.4%). Austria (X units), Ireland (X units), Bulgaria (X units), Hungary (X units), Finland (X units), Greece (X units) and Slovenia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Belgium increased at an average annual rate of +19.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lithuania (+49.5%), Slovenia (+32.2%), Greece (+24.9%), Portugal (+13.5%), Ireland (+12.9%), Bulgaria (+11.8%), France (+4.7%), Romania (+3.4%), Hungary (+3.2%) and Austria (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lithuania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +49.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Finland (-1.8%) and Poland (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovenia and Greece increased by +20, +8.8, +2.6, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported calendering and rolling machines in the European Union, comprising 16% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 7.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 5.4% share.
In Belgium, calendering machine imports increased at an average annual rate of +18.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+3.5% per year) and Poland (-8.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 998%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($X per unit) and Belgium ($X per unit), while Slovenia ($X per unit) and Greece ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
