Camel Meat Market Size in the EU

The EU camel meat market dropped significantly to $X in 2022, waning by -18% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a precipitous decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Camel Meat Production in the EU

In value terms, camel meat production dropped markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 1,982% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Belgium (X tons) remains the largest camel meat producing country in the European Union, comprising approx. 69% of total volume. Moreover, camel meat production in Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (X tons), sixfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9% share.

In Belgium, camel meat production expanded at an average annual rate of +146.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: France (+0.6% per year) and Germany (0.0% per year).

Exports in the EU

In 2022, camel meat exports in the European Union contracted remarkably to X kg, waning by -91.9% against 2021. In general, exports faced a sharp decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 327% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, camel meat exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 360% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Belgium (X kg), together finishing at 100% of total export.

Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the camel meat exports, with a CAGR of -36.6% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) also remains the largest camel meat supplier in the European Union.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of camel meat, when their volume increased by 8.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a dramatic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 207%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, camel meat imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 253% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Sweden dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 83% of total imports in 2022. Spain (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8% share, followed by Greece (7.2%). The Netherlands (X kg) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Sweden decreased at an average annual rate of -13.5% from 2012 to 2022. Greece (-10.7%), Spain (-18.0%) and the Netherlands (-26.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sweden (+83 p.p.), Greece (+7.2 p.p.) and Spain (+4.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported camel meat in the European Union, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Greece ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 15% share.

In Sweden, camel meat imports decreased by an average annual rate of -15.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Greece (-5.5% per year) and Spain (-18.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, waning by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
