In 2022, the average yield of canary seed in the European Union amounted to X tons per ha, almost unchanged from 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 17%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the canary seed yield remained at a lower figure. In 2022, shipments abroad of canary seed decreased by -24.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports faced a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canary seed exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) was the largest exporter of canary seed, creating 47% of total exports. France (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 40% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - each accounted for an 8.8% share of total exports.
Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, France (+123.7%), Portugal (+32.4%), the Czech Republic (+23.7%), Italy (+11.8%) and Germany (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +123.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hungary (-9.3%) and Belgium (-25.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+43 p.p.), France (+14 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+5.6 p.p.), Italy (+2.9 p.p.), Portugal (+2.6 p.p.), Germany (+2.4 p.p.) and Hungary (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-48 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest canary seed supplier in the European Union, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 12% share.
In the Netherlands, canary seed exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+124.5% per year) and Belgium (-22.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 29% against the previous year. Export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, canary seed export price increased by +65.3% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of canary seed were imported in the European Union; with a decrease of -13.6% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canary seed imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Belgium was the major importer of canary seed in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2022. Spain (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Italy (9.8%), Portugal (8.1%), Germany (5.3%) and France (4.8%). Greece (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest canary seed importing markets in the European Union were Belgium ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 72% share of total imports. Portugal, Germany, France and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Greece, with a CAGR of +6.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 32% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, canary seed import price increased by +71.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Greece ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
