Canary Seed Market Size in the EU

The EU canary seed market expanded markedly to $X in 2022, growing by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, shipments abroad of canary seed decreased by -24.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports faced a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canary seed exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) was the largest exporter of canary seed, creating 47% of total exports. France (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together took near 40% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) - each accounted for an 8.8% share of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, France (+123.7%), Portugal (+32.4%), the Czech Republic (+23.7%), Italy (+11.8%) and Germany (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +123.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hungary (-9.3%) and Belgium (-25.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+43 p.p.), France (+14 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+5.6 p.p.), Italy (+2.9 p.p.), Portugal (+2.6 p.p.), Germany (+2.4 p.p.) and Hungary (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-48 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest canary seed supplier in the European Union, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 12% share.

In the Netherlands, canary seed exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+124.5% per year) and Belgium (-22.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 29% against the previous year. Export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, canary seed export price increased by +65.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canary seed imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Based on 2022 figures, canary seed import price increased by +71.1% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
