Carbides Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU carbides market increased by 3.4% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after seven years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the market value increased by 9.5%. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbides production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a abrupt shrinkage. In 2022, approx. X tons of carbides were exported in the European Union; waning by -11.8% against the year before. In general, exports recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbides exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the three major exporters of carbides, namely Germany, Slovakia and the Netherlands, represented more than half of total export. Sweden (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Romania (X tons) and Belgium (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 19% share of total exports. Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +11.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest carbides supplier in the European Union, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Slovakia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.

In Germany, carbides exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+4.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-2.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 34% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

Carbides imports fell slightly to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -1.7% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbides imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Germany was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 35% of total imports. France (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Poland (8.9%), Italy (7.8%), the Czech Republic (6.3%), Belgium (5.8%) and Spain (5.6%).

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of carbides. At the same time, Spain (+14.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2022. France, Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+4.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -1.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported carbides in the European Union, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 7.9% share.

In Germany, carbides imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+1.8% per year) and Italy (+3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
