The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 16%. Exports in the EU
In 2021, shipments abroad of cereal germ increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cereal germ exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +74.3% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the ten major exporters of cereal germ, namely France, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Slovakia, Germany and Romania, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +46.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest cereal germ supplying countries in the European Union were Austria ($X), France ($X) and Hungary ($X), with a combined 48% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Slovakia and Romania, which together accounted for a further 49%.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +37.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 35% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cereal Germ Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2021, overseas purchases of cereal germ increased by 6.5% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cereal germ imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented the largest importers of cereal germ in the European Union, together reaching near 68% of total imports. Hungary (X tons) held a 6.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (4.9%). France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Austria (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Romania (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +38.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Italy ($X) and Hungary ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Germany, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +22.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
