In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the EU non-wheat cereal pellets market, when its value decreased by -8.6% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in the EU

In 2021, exports of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) in the European Union contracted modestly to X tons, waning by -2.6% compared with 2020. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +18.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat cereal pellets exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +37.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ireland (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the largest exporters of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) in the European Union, together committing 53% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Belgium (9.9%), Spain (6.1%) and Sweden (5.9%). France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +177.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-wheat cereal pellets supplying countries in the European Union were Ireland ($X), Spain ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 66% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Belgium, Sweden and France, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +155.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+14.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cereal pellets (excluding wheat) decreased by -20% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat cereal pellets imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 45% of total imports. Spain (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Slovakia (6.7%), Portugal (6.6%), Italy (6.5%), Romania (5.5%) and the Czech Republic (5.2%). Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Slovakia (+11.8%), Italy (+9.3%), the Czech Republic (+5.4%) and Portugal (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2021. Spain and Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-11.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+21 p.p.), Slovakia (+4.1 p.p.), Italy (+3.4 p.p.), Portugal (+2 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -7.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cereal pellets (excluding wheat) in the European Union, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 10% share.

In the Netherlands, non-wheat cereal pellets imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (-1.5% per year) and Slovakia (+12.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
