Other Cereals Market Size in the EU

In 2021, the EU other cereals market increased by 1.3% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Other Cereals Production in the EU

In value terms, other cereals production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -18.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 62%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Poland (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of other cereals production, accounting for 50% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (X tons), with a 14% share.

In Poland, other cereals production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-1.4% per year) and France (-2.7% per year).

The average other cereals yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2021, falling by -6.6% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the yield increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of other cerealses in the European Union rose modestly to X ha, growing by 4.6% on 2020 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a slight slump. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to other cereals production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the EU

In 2021, the amount of other cerealses exported in the European Union reduced rapidly to X tons, waning by -19.9% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals exports dropped to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +76.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 63% of total exports. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons). All these countries together held near 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Sweden (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

Poland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the other cerealses exports, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sweden (+21.9%), Belgium (+18.2%) and the Netherlands (+12.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany, the Czech Republic and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Poland and Sweden increased by +48 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of other cerealses imported in the European Union declined markedly to X tons, falling by -18.5% on 2020. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +65.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 102%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals imports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +40.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the key importers of other cerealses in 2021, finishing at near 36% and 25% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), comprising a 16% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons), Italy (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Portugal (with a CAGR of +29.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
