Copper Chain Market Size in the EU

The EU copper chain market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -10.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a abrupt decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, copper chain production contracted sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 210%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

For the third year in a row, the European Union recorded decline in shipments abroad of chain and parts thereof of copper, which decreased by -12.9% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports faced a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, copper chain exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main exporters of chain and parts thereof of copper in the European Union, together reaching near 59% of total exports. Germany (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Slovakia (6.2%). The Czech Republic (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest copper chain supplier in the European Union, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 17% share.

In Italy, copper chain exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+7.4% per year) and Germany (-4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 22% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+17.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

Copper chain imports dropped to X tons in 2022, which is down by -14% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, copper chain imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 62%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the major importers of chain and parts thereof of copper, together mixing up 73% of total imports. Portugal (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Greece (X tons), Poland (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Italy decreased at an average annual rate of -10.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sweden (+14.5%), Bulgaria (+11.0%), Portugal (+7.5%), Poland (+7.2%), the Netherlands (+6.8%), Greece (+4.4%), Spain (+3.1%), Germany (+2.7%) and France (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2022. Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Slovakia (-17.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+7.1 p.p.), Germany (+6.8 p.p.), France (+5.5 p.p.), Portugal (+3.1 p.p.), Sweden (+3 p.p.), Spain (+2.5 p.p.), Romania (+2.3 p.p.), Poland (+2.3 p.p.) and Greece (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Slovakia (-9.7 p.p.) and Italy (-22.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 71% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Bulgaria, Spain, Sweden, Poland and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main importing countries, Sweden, with a CAGR of +20.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -4.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, copper chain import price increased by +14.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 58%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
