The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 22%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, Spain (X tons) and Greece (X tons) represented the major exporters of cherries and sour cherries in the European Union, together resulting at approx. 43% of total exports. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. At the same time, Romania (+27.6%), Austria (+14.6%), Sweden (+12.9%), Portugal (+11.9%), Spain (+10.3%), Poland (+8.5%), Bulgaria (+5.9%), Denmark (+3.8%) and the Netherlands (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +27.6% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.3%) and Belgium (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Austria (+8.6 p.p.), Romania (+4.2 p.p.), Spain (+1.6 p.p.) and Poland (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France, Italy, Belgium and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.8%, -4.8% and -13.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries and sour cherries in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany totaled -1.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+13.5% per year) and France (+0.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a mild curtailment.
