Cherry Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU cherry market decreased by -4.8% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Greece (X tons), with a combined 54% share of total production. Poland, Bulgaria, Romania and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

The average cherry yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -3.6% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. After two years of growth, overseas shipments of cherries decreased by -24.2% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, cherry exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Spain (X tons) and Greece (X tons) represented roughly 53% of total exports in 2022. Austria (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (8.8%), Belgium (5.8%) and the Netherlands (4.8%). In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of cherries decreased by -25% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 16%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, cherry imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 33% of total imports. Austria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by France (7.2%), the Netherlands (6.5%) and Italy (5.9%). The following importers - Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons), Romania (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Latvia (X tons) - together made up 25% of total imports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of cherries. At the same time, Romania (+31.4%), Latvia (+20.9%), Austria (+19.0%), Sweden (+16.5%), Poland (+16.2%), Spain (+11.1%), Portugal (+11.1%) and Denmark (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +31.4% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-2.5%) and Belgium (-6.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Austria, Romania, Poland, Spain, Latvia and Sweden increased by +11, +3.4, +2.8, +2, +1.8 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 9.2% share.

In Germany, cherry imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Austria (+14.8% per year) and France (+1.1% per year).
