Chili And Pepper Market Size in the EU

After six years of growth, the EU chili and pepper market decreased by -2.4% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 13%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Spain (X tons) remains the largest chili and pepper producing country in the European Union, comprising approx. 49% of total volume. Moreover, chili and pepper production in Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with an 8.8% share.

In Spain, chili and pepper production expanded at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+2.0% per year) and Poland (+12.6% per year).

The average chili and pepper yield declined slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -2% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chili and pepper yield increased by +52.3% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The chili and pepper harvested area shrank slightly to X ha in 2022, which is down by -3.7% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, overseas shipments of chilies and peppers (green) decreased by -7.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 8.8%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports fell to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Exports by Country

Spain represented the major exporter of chilies and peppers (green) in the European Union, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 54% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), making up a 29% share of total exports. France (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Sweden and the Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
