In value terms, wood chips and particles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.3% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Latvia (X cubic meters) and Germany (X cubic meters) represented the major exporters of wood chips and particles in 2022, accounting for near 25% and 19% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Slovenia (X cubic meters), Estonia (X cubic meters), Lithuania (X cubic meters) and France (X cubic meters), together constituting a 34% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belgium (X cubic meters), Sweden (X cubic meters), Austria (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) and Slovakia (X cubic meters) - together made up 14% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lithuania (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Latvia ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 48% of total exports. Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

Lithuania, with a CAGR of +14.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per cubic meter), while Lithuania ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of wood chips and particles decreased by -9.1% to X cubic meters, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -20.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

The purchases of the eleven major importers of wood chips and particles, namely Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Austria, Finland, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Lithuania, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +28.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Portugal ($X), Denmark ($X) and Finland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 44% of total imports. Sweden, Austria, France, Poland, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Among the main importing countries, Belgium, with a CAGR of +19.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood chips and particles import price increased by +59.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per cubic meter), while Poland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
