The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 8.8% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, chocolate exports fell to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the major exporters of chocolate and cocoa products, together mixing up 80% of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) - together made up 10% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest chocolate supplier in the European Union, comprising 27% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany amounted to +3.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+1.2% per year) and Italy (+4.3% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. For the seventh consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in supplies from abroad of chocolate and cocoa products, which increased by 2.3% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, chocolate imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 12%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, France (X tons), Germany (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Romania (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) was the main importer of chocolate and cocoa products in the European Union, mixing up 84% of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 45% of total imports. Poland, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Austria, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, declining by -5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 6.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
