Exports in the EU
For the eleventh year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in shipments abroad of chocolate and confectionery, which increased by 0.2% to X tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 8.5%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, chocolate and confectionery exports declined to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the key exporters of chocolate and confectionery in 2022, finishing at approx. 24% and 22% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together comprising a 37% share of total exports. Spain (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +7.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest chocolate and confectionery supplying countries in the European Union were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 55% share of total exports. Italy, Poland, France and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +7.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 8.3%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+0.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, the amount of chocolate and confectionery imported in the European Union expanded modestly to X tons, increasing by 2.3% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, chocolate and confectionery imports fell modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 10%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($X per ton) and Ireland ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
