Chromates Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU chromates market increased by 61% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X tons of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates were exported in the European Union; surging by 13% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 105%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chromates exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted pronounced growth. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 45% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (17%) and Estonia (12%). The following exporters - Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to chromates exports from Austria stood at -6.2%. At the same time, Bulgaria (+71.4%) and the Netherlands (+15.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +71.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-10.4%), France (-23.1%), Belgium (-24.7%) and Estonia (-26.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Austria, the Netherlands, Germany and Bulgaria increased by +27, +18, +6.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Estonia ($X) emerged as the largest chromates supplier in the European Union, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 8.9% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.8% share.

In Estonia, chromates exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-4.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+14.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 286% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a strong expansion. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+47.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chromates imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a mild setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany was the main importer of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates in the European Union, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 54% of total imports in 2022. Estonia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Romania (6.4%) and Austria (4.9%). The following importers - France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) - each recorded an 8% share of total imports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates. At the same time, Austria (+12.8%), Romania (+9.1%) and Estonia (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-7.5%) and Italy (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, Estonia, Romania and Austria increased by +4.3, +4, +3.9 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates in the European Union, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Estonia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Estonia (-2.8% per year) and France (-3.1% per year).
