Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+47.9%), Slovakia (+34.4%), Italy (+14.3%), Hungary (+12.0%) and Spain (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +47.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+20 p.p.), Hungary (+11 p.p.), Poland (+7.7 p.p.), Spain (+3.6 p.p.), Slovakia (+2.1 p.p.) and Italy (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -15.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Hungary, Poland, Italy and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Among the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +45.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 9.7% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Germany and Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-3.3%) and the Netherlands (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Greece and Belgium increased by +35, +4, +2.9, +2.7 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -23.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
