The EU common clay market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -5.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a abrupt downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 58% of total exports. Portugal (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (12%) and the Netherlands (7.5%). The following exporters - France (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each recorded a 6.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to common clay exports from Germany stood at -2.0%. At the same time, Portugal (+11.4%), France (+6.1%) and the Czech Republic (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +11.4% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Portugal (+8.4 p.p.), France (+1.6 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Spain (-3.3 p.p.) and Germany (-9.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest common clay supplying countries in the European Union were Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 73% of total exports. France, Portugal and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Portugal, with a CAGR of +14.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -12.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-1.7%), France (-2.9%) and the Netherlands (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Spain (+5.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Italy (-3 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported common clay in the European Union, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy totaled +1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+21.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+3.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, common clay import price increased by +71.8% against 2016 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
