The Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) dominates exports structure, together committing 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), comprising a 6.4% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Germany (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Spain ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 79% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Germany and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
Among the main exporting countries, Germany, with a CAGR of +15.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coal other than lingite export price increased by +51.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 44%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of coal other than lingites increased by 96% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +152.5% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country
Germany represented the main importer of coal other than lingites in the European Union, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2022. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each finished at a 6.5% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coal other than lingite imports into Germany stood at +9.7%. At the same time, the Czech Republic (+15.1%) and Poland (+14.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Czech Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012-2022. Belgium and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-1.9%), the Netherlands (-2.7%) and Italy (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Germany (+17 p.p.), Poland (+9.5 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-1.7 p.p.), France (-3.4 p.p.), Spain (-5.4 p.p.), the Netherlands (-6.3 p.p.) and Italy (-7.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coal other than lingites in the European Union, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to +8.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+16.5% per year) and Italy (+1.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 49%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
