From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +16.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Spain ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 79% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Germany and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coal other than lingite export price increased by +51.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 44%. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +152.5% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

While the share of Germany (+17 p.p.), Poland (+9.5 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belgium (-1.7 p.p.), France (-3.4 p.p.), Spain (-5.4 p.p.), the Netherlands (-6.3 p.p.) and Italy (-7.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coal other than lingites in the European Union, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to +8.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+16.5% per year) and Italy (+1.4% per year).

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 49%.
