In 2021, the EU colour lake market decreased by -32.1% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, saw a strong expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of colour lakes, preparations based on colour lakes, when their volume decreased by -28.5% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, colour lake exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands represented the major exporter of colour lakes, preparations based on colour lakes in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 53% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Belgium (11%), Spain (7.6%) and France (4.6%). The following exporters - Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - together made up 4.2% of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands decreased at an average annual rate of -6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+29.6%), Spain (+15.9%), Belgium (+4.4%) and France (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +29.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-7.0%) and Italy (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+6.3 p.p.), Belgium (+6 p.p.), France (+2.2 p.p.) and Poland (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Italy, Germany and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -4.8% and -10.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 75% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Italy, Spain and Poland, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +35.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 71% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of colour lakes, preparations based on colour lakes imported in the European Union rose modestly to X tons, picking up by 1.7% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 11%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, colour lake imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Belgium (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Austria (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main importers of colour lakes, preparations based on colour lakes, together achieving 80% of total imports. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
