In value terms, vegetable or animal colouring matter exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the six major exporters of colouring matter of vegetable or animal origin, namely Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Denmark and France, represented more than two-thirds of total export. The following exporters - Belgium (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Denmark ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 54% of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Italy, France, Belgium and Austria, which together accounted for a further 38%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Austria, with a CAGR of +24.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 23%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, imports of colouring matter of vegetable or animal origin in the European Union dropped modestly to X tons, which is down by -4.1% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, vegetable or animal colouring matter imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, Italy (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the main importers of colouring matter of vegetable or animal origin in the European Union, together reaching approx. 36% of total imports. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Germany (10%), Spain (9.8%), Denmark (6.2%) and Belgium (4.9%). The following importers - Ireland (X tons), Poland (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +12.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest vegetable or animal colouring matter importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 49% share of total imports. France, Italy, Denmark, Belgium, Poland, Ireland, Austria and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +10.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, vegetable or animal colouring matter import price increased by +26.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
